Buffet vs. Sit-Down: The battle continues…

So many times I have heard arguments over which is the better choice for a wedding, a buffet or a plated sit-down meal. The answer? Well, there isn’t really an answer. It all depends on you. The biggest misconception I have heard is that a buffet makes the wedding look cheap, or that it’s tacky. As I think about that statement, I find myself looking at weddings and events at the Log Cabin and Delaney House, and I’m having a very hard time picking out anything that has been tacky or cheap looking.

The thing is, a buffet isn’t, or shouldn’t be, a display of food that has been sitting for hours on end and that looks questionable. It should be fresh and constantly maintained by staff and feature the foods that you’ve picked for your guests. That’s never a problem at these two venues. Staff is always around refreshing food and making sure everything looks fantastic.

Another option people don’t always think about for buffet style dinners is one that we covered with the Wheeler/Plante wedding: stations. A buffet doesn’t need to be a single long table with chafers and a single file line of guests (i.e. most people ideas of a buffet…leading to the “cheap” comments). A station style buffet brings guests around the room to explore their options, making it so the hosts of this party get praises for offering so many options and pleasing everyone.

However, the plated option has it’s place. It is tradtionally a more formal option (though trends are changing and a buffet can be made extremely elegant). The plated option does restrict guests, but also may put you at ease with only offering a few different choices.

Whichever you’re leaning towards, don’t let naysayers get in the way! Buffet or sit-down, the menu possibilities are endless. And remember: always ask. With these venues especially, whatever you want, you can pretty much get. Exciting stations or buffets, endless plated options….it’s all here. Don’t let anything stop your dream wedding!
